The Village of St. Pierre is working on ways to bring back the compost service in the community.

As previously announced, the national compost project between the Village and the RM of De Salaberry has come to an end and the compost site at the De Salaberry landfill has been closed.

The compost program was scheduled to kick off for the year on April first. Mayor Raymond Maynard says they have heard from some St. Pierre residents who are disappointed that the service has been put on hold.

"Definitely for us, that’s a step back, but hopefully it’s just a step back temporarily," says Maynard.

He notes council is working with another local municipality who is currently looking to set up a compost program of their own and potentially join forces with them. Maynard says they pride themselves in trying to make St. Pierre as environmentally friendly as possible.

"Composting is something that the village has at heart and it’s not something that we want to stop," he shares, "but, unfortunately, like the RM indicated, according to them, it wasn’t feasible to sell the product."

Maynard says council is working on it and feels confident they will be able to offer a compost service to their residents in the near future.
