The speed limit has gone up on Main Street in Steinbach in the vicinity of the water tower. New signs went up Wednesday. Troy Warkentin, the city's Chief Administrative Officer, says the change was approved over two years ago.

"This actually goes back awhile where the City of Steinbach had made a request to the Highway Traffic Board to review the speed zones along the eastern portions of Main Street. That review and approval was actually completed back in February of 2015."

But, since Main Street is part of a provincial highway, he says it is up to Manitoba Infrastructure to change the signs and that took until this week. Warkentin notes when Manitoba Infrastructure studied city council's initial request in early 2015, it found the design of the roadway there was suitable for a 60 kilometre per hour speed limit. It also noted the higher speed would more accurately reflect the speed that people were travelling along that stretch of road.
