A low pressure system from the Dakotas is producing a late season heavy snowfall in southern Manitoba.

Steinbach and area is under a heavy snowfall warning. Natalie Hasell with Environment Canada says they are expecting 10 to 20 centimetres of snow in Steinbach Monday during the day and then another 2 centimetres in the evening.

Hasell says motorists can expect reduced visibility throughout the day. She notes wind from the northeast is expected to gust to 35 to 40 kilometres per hour, resulting in drifting snow. But Hasell says it is the heavy snowfall, not the winds that will reduce visibility.

Meanwhile, Hasell says the Red River Valley typically gets 10 to 12 centimetres of snow each April. And in fact, she says a late April heavy snowfall is not that unusual. In 1996 we received 7.2 centimetres of snow on this day and way back in 1937 we got 17.3 centimetres of the white stuff.

Other significant late season snowfalls happened on April 27, 1966, when it snowed 20.8 centimetres, May 9, 2002, when it snowed 20 centimetres, May 11, 2004, when it snowed 29 centimetres and May 19, 1931, when it snowed 20.3 centimetres.
