The head of Steinbach Public Works says they are cleaning up snow piles around schools to improve visibility and safety for students. Randy Reimer says it had been their intention to have this work completed last week but mother nature intervened.

"With the snowfall that we got last week, we spent the whole week plowing snow and getting streets cleaned up again. We went out at midnight last night and were hoping to get around to Woodlawn School, Southwood School and Stonybrook Middle School along Lumber Avenue. But with the volume of snow out there, it's going quite a bit slower than anticipated."

He notes the areas around Woodlawn and Southwood Schools were cleaned up Monday morning. Reimer adds they plan to tackle snow piles in the areas around Stonybrook Middle School Monday night as well as parts of Mckenzie Avenue near Steinbach Regional Secondary School. But with more snow in the forecast, he says they may have to put clean-up crews back on street clearing duty.

"If we get the six centimetres of snow overnight, we're going to have to clean up streets. So it'll depend on whether we get that six centimetres or not."

Reimer says it's also his understanding that Manitoba Infrastructure plans to haul away a lot of snow Monday night from the medians and boulevards along Highway #12 through Steinbach.
