A seed grower at Ste. Anne expects seeding will get underway next week. Brian Dueck of Seine River Seed Farms says the snow this week has been a bit of a setback but the weather is looking much better next week and planting will soon begin.

"I would still hope for the first week of May. I would expect most guys to get going if the weather turns around, so the end of next week."

Dueck says the weather during harvest last fall has left behind a variety of conditions for seeding.

"There are fields with ruts and water and there are fields that are in very good shape that guys will be able to start seeding earlier without having to do any pre-working of the field."

Dueck reiterates what we told you earlier this week, that much of the winter wheat crop here in the southeast did not survive. He expects a lot of those acres will be seeded to red spring wheat or soybeans. Dueck says it appears oat and soybean acres will be up this year and barley acres will be down a bit.
