All of the generous donations collected at the Taste of Summer Charity Barbecue Wednesday are going to Safe Families Steinbach.

Director Michelle Peters says the $1,696 raised at the barbecue will go a long way to helping kickstart their fledgling organization in Steinbach so they can start helping local families.

"Safe Families is a preventative step before families in crisis get to the child welfare system. What we aim to do is surround families that are struggling that are in crisis with very intentional community and just building in those supports so that they are able to care for their children."

Peters says with the money from the Taste of Summer Charity Barbecue, they are now just under halfway to their overall fundraising goal. She notes the first step when they are able to open their doors will be to screen the 50 or 60 volunteers that have already expressed interest to make sure that they are placing children into safe and secure environments that suit them.
