The RM of Ritchot intends to allow cannabis to be sold from retail locations within the municipality.

Deputy Mayor Shane Pelletier says council approved the motion.

"We've passed a resolution, basically saying that we accept the fact that this is coming to fruition at some point next summer," says Pelletier. "It is going to be a legal product and we just wanted to let everybody know that at this point until we get some more information from the feds and from the province, that we would be open to having retail locations in our RM."

It was suggested municipalities could hold a plebiscite on the matter and use that information to make its decision. Pelletier says council never considered having ratepayers vote on the matter.

"We still don't have enough information from the province and from the federal government as far as what our options are going to be," says Pelletier. "If we need to at a later date, we can look at having the public come forward."

Pelletier says he is not aware of any retailer seriously considering opening shop in Ritchot.

Meanwhile, he says from what he has been hearing in his ward, which is Ward One in the Ile des Chenes area, most people have spoken very favourably towards this resolution.
