The population of the Ile des Chenes ward in Ritchot is expected to be trimmed in half.

Mayor Chris Ewen explains the municipality is undergoing a ward boundary review. Ewen says it seems most people in Ritchot don't want to see the number of wards change and so for now that will probably stay status quo. But because similar populations are needed in each ward, the municipality is now undergoing a review.

According to Ewen, the population of the Ile des Chenes ward today is probably between 1200 and 1300 residents. He notes if all goes according to plan, they will likely shave that down to 600 or 700 residents.

"So Ile des Chenes definitely will see a significant drop in that area," notes Ewen. "And we're going to be allocating it to the Grande Pointe as well as the Ste. Agathe region."

Council for the RM of Ritchot has given first reading to the proposed changes. Ewen notes the changes could be approved on December 20th. Ewen says even though it is not a public hearing, if a ratepayer is interested in making a comment at that meeting, he might allow for it.

Ewen says he thinks the changes need to be in place by May 1st in order to be ready for the October election.
