The Mayor for Ritchot says he hopes to add two junior councillors this fall.

In October, Chris Ewen announced the municipality was hoping to add a youth member. This junior councillor would be allowed to sit in on debates and discussions but would have no power to vote. Ewen says two candidates stepped forward. But because it is getting late in the school year, Ewen is hoping they can bring them on board for fall.

Ewen says they are also making plans to take their council meetings on the road. Their April 18 meeting will be held at St. Adolphe School and the May 28th meeting will take place at Ile des Chenes School.

"What we're going to be doing essentially is doing a real public council meeting in the mornings and having all the students around so they get a feel and an understanding on what it's like to be a part of a council meeting," explains Ewen.

He expects those meetings will start at 9 am. Ewen says if possible he would like to have students involved in delegations where they can ask questions.

"I just think it's a great opportunity to try and get people involved in municipal politics at such a young level," says Ewen. "So when they are ready to vote they understand the system and why they are voting."

Ewen says Ritchot has a history of young councillors and mayors. For example, he became Mayor at the age of 29. Ewen says he also knows of a previous Councillor elected at age 19.

"The more we know at a younger age, the more opportunities there are for them to be part of the political scene," he says.

In the case of Ewen, he says if this sort of opportunity had been around when he was in high school, he might have become interested in politics at an even younger age.
