Council for the Rural Municipality of Ritchot is considering adding another member. However, this new member would have no power to vote.

Mayor Chris Ewen says after looking through their bylaws, he discovered there is an opportunity to bring a youth member onto council. In the coming weeks, they will put out the invitation to high school students interested in this political role.

Ewen says the youth member would not be allowed to vote, but could take part in debates and discussions. He adds, hopefully, it would be worth a school credit.

"If not, it will just be a great learning opportunity, something you can put on your resume that you were a part of the decision-making in the council chambers," says Ewen. "So I'm really excited about that."

Ewen says he would like this junior Councillor to be a high school student living in Ritchot. But with only one high school in the municipality, Ewen says they may be willing to extend the border if there is someone interested that lives nearby. Interested students should drop off their resume at the municipal office in St. Adolphe.

Further to that, Ewen is also hoping to take the show on the road. His goal is to run council meetings once or twice per year from inside a school.

"I think today's politicians are getting a little bit younger like myself," he says. "It's going to be a great opportunity for those young people to see what it takes to run a government."
