Manitoba's police watchdog has made a ruling after a police officer allegedly drove at excessive speeds earlier this year in southeastern Manitoba.

On January 13th, RCMP notified the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of an allegation towards an on-duty officer operating a police vehicle at excessive speed without lawful jurisdiction to do so. According to the notification, the act had been observed two days earlier, at approximately 4:15 pm, along Highway 59 between Niverville and St. Pierre. On January 15th, the IIU stated that the civilian director determined it would be in the public interest for the IIU to investigate.

The civilian director of the IIU has now determined there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offense occurred under the Highway Traffic Act. As a result, the officer has been issued a summons for July 27 in St. Pierre Provincial Court for driving carelessly.
