Construction for the Bethesda Primary Care Centre in Steinbach, located at 381 Stonebridge Crossing, is officially underway. That comes after the sod turning ceremony Monday morning.

Minister of Health, Seniors and Active Living, Kelvin Goertzen, says it was special to be at his first sod turning ceremony in his home community as the Minister of Health. Goertzen says it was also special because it represents a partnership between the community and the region.

"Of course, there are challenges sometimes in filling those needs but that was never a deterrent. They came together with many partnership groups and said, how do we overcome that challenge and fulfill the need, and they did it."

Goertzen notes the community and region have always been about focusing on the opportunity rather than the obstacles.

Mayor Chris Goertzen says the centre is a great example of how health care can work and be innovative adding the centre will help improve health care for people in the area.

"This is going to improve health care for people. It's going to put all primary care under one roof. So, you can go see your doctor, you'll have a pharmacy, you'll have other aspects in that facility that will allow for better health care, and keeping people out of the ER and out of the hospital."

Goertzen adds, he suspects, this will also open up more opportunities for doctors to come to Steinbach.

The anticipated completion date of the building is August 2017.
