As rail safety week winds down, a couple of politicians are offering their thoughts.

“Rail safety is something that was brought in here as a result of a fatality in Ste Anne,” says Dawson Trail MLA Bob Lagasse, “and that’s why we wanted to highlight this.”

Lagasse says they were working with CN before the week began to help highlight the awareness week.

“We don’t want anybody to get hurt, especially young kids around rails when it’s completely preventable.”

Lagasse says he still sees social media posts with photos of children on railway tracks and hears stories of people attempting to outrun trains and so seeks to further highlight the topic.

“I would almost say that it’s not a lack of infrastructure,” offers Lagasse, “I would say it’s more people don’t think around trains.”

According to Minister of Infrastructure Ron Schuler “the railways have been here a long time, some for over a hundred years” and so safety is a personal responsibility.

“You have to be careful, like with everything else,” says Schuler acknowledging the tragic incidences that have occurred in the area.

“You can’t outrun a train; don’t try it.”
