RCMP now say an arson in Winnipeg is linked to the murder of Gerhard Reimer-Wiebe of Steinbach.

On June 24th, Manitoba RCMP responded to a report of human remains found near Baker Street in Portage la Prairie. Investigators with Major Crime Services and Forensic Identification Services attended the scene and worked with the Medical Examiner's Office to determine that it was a homicide.

On Monday of this week, police released information on the identity of the deceased. Dead is 27-year-old Gerhard Reimer-Wiebe of Steinbach. He had been living in Winnipeg and police believe his body was placed in Portage on June 20th. On that same day, at 6 am, there was an arson at 381 Alfred Avenue in Winnipeg.

Police believe this arson is linked to the murder of Gerhard Reimer-Wiebe and think this home contains physical evidence related to the homicide. Forensic Identification officers and arson investigators are on scene today with excavators, overseeing the removal of the debris which will be transported to a secure warehouse where forensic experts will sift through every fragment to look for evidence.
