The owner of Marc Hutlet Seeds at Ste. Anne says seeding of later seeded crops is nearing completion. Marc Hutlet estimates planting of corn was 95% complete as of Thursday.

Seeding soybeans"Some of the early planted corn is up. In some fields there are actually some rows from fields planted in the first few days of May so, as much as it's been cooler at night, we still had had enough heat units to kick that corn out of the ground. That's very encouraging. Soybeans within our area, I would say seeding is 60-70% complete. There are a couple of big days ahead of us yet with guys trying to wrap that up."

Hutlet says the three-tenths of an inch of rain we received this week was not enough for farmers who need rain. But he notes there are areas around Giroux, La Broquerie and south of Grunthal where producers don't want rain because the ground is still pretty wet. Hutlet says any frost this week shouldn't be a problem in crops like corn.

"If it peels off or fries that first leaf, it'll come back right away. There's never a good time to have frost but, if we do have a little bit of frost, this is the perfect time because it gets going right away instead of when you have a bigger plant that has to grow out of the whorl again."
