Insurance for overland flooding may be able to be added to your current home insurance policy.

Orville Giesbrecht is the co-owner of Harvest Insurance in Steinbach. Giesbrecht says after Calgary experienced a major flood about three years ago insurance companies started to look into what they could do to assist homeowners during such an event in the future.

He adds this coverage is new for this year.

"[The coverage] will protect your home if water comes into your house from a window well or a cracked foundation, or something along that line. Most insurance companies will require that you have sewer and/or water backup coverage on the policy first. Then you would be able to add the flood coverage onto the policy after that."

Bonnie Neufeld from Harvest Insurance says not every policy offers the coverage and premiums vary from policy to policy.

"Some companies are offering only overland water coverage and some companies are also offering ground water coverage. The difference being, overland would be something that would come in through window wells, and ground water would be something that would come in through cracks in the foundation."

Neufeld notes she has seen premiums for the overland water insurance range from $50 to over $400. She adds the premium is based upon the preference of each insurance company as well as the location of the residence.

She says, if a homeowner has any questions, the best course of action is to speak with their insurance broker.
