Two males were arrested near Falcon Lake on Monday after RCMP found over one million contraband cigarettes in their possession.

At around 3 PM, Members of the Roving Traffic Unit stopped a vehicle traveling west on Highway 1. After speaking with the occupants, they inspected their load and found 120 cases of illegal tobacco containing 1,200,000 cigarettes.

RCMP arrested 47-year-old Issa Ahmad and 40-year-old Behzad Ahmed both of Edmonton, Alberta. The two are facing charges for trafficking contraband tobacco under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Tax Administration and Miscellaneous Taxes Act, and the Excise Act. If they are convicted, police say the men could be hit with a mandatory triple tax penalty of $1,080,000.

Both males were remanded into custody and have been released on a promise to appear in court.

RCMP continue to investigate.
