An adult male was airlifted to Health Sciences Centre in critical condition following a two-vehicle collision about half a mile west of Giroux at approximately 7:30 Thursday evening.

Steinbach Deputy Fire Chief Ron Chausse says it appears a car with one occupant rear-ended a semi-truck hauling farm chemicals on highway 311.

"Steinbach Fire, Giroux Fire, Steinbach EMS and the RCMP are on scene. Steinbach Fire completed a rapid extrication of the single occupant of the vehicle, the driver. STARS was called in and has evacuated the driver of the vehicle. We do know the driver is in critical condition, the total nature of the injuries is unknown."

Chausse says the lone occupant and driver of the semi-truck was unharmed in the collision. He notes an RCMP traffic analyst was called in to investigate the cause of the collision and highway 311 is expected to be closed until around 11:00 P.M. Thursday.
