Bear sightings have dropped off in Steinbach.

Manitoba Conservation along with Steinbach RCMP were trying to track down the bear after sighting reports early Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for Manitoba Conservation says they can confirm reports of a bear in Steinbach which their officers were investigating. He says tracks were found but the trail was lost at which point there were no further sightings. They suspect the bear found its way out of the city.

Conservation reminds the public to be bear smart; they had warned a young woman about the bear while she was out for a walk near Main Street and Barkman Avenue Sunday morning. They told her to go home for safety's sake.

These bear sightings come just a little over a month after a moose was spotted wandering through Steinbach.

Conservation says, "bears typically enter hibernation around the end of October, but the timing depends on a multitude of factors, mainly weather including temperature, snow cover, and access to food. If it's a warmer fall and there is still food, bears may delay hibernation."

They add if a bear hibernates and gets disturbed, it may then be out looking for a new place to hibernate.

Meanwhile, Conservation notes geese migrated a little later this year than usual adding geese will generally take flight when they lose access to water.
