Steinbach city council has agreed to keep the current system of very few U-turns being allowed at intersections on Main Street. Some councillors had asked the administration for a study on the matter, noting some motorists are frustrated by having to drive around a whole city block instead of being able to make a simple U-turn. Mayor Chris Goertzen says council met in committee Tuesday evening and received the administration's report on the matter.

"The report from administration showed clearly that Main Street has been designed specifically for pedestrian safety and the flow of through traffic as well. So when it comes to U-turns, those are not really part of the design."

The only U-turns currently allowed on Main Street are near Highway #12 and at the fire hall and intersections east of there. Goertzen says at all of the other intersections, motorists will continue to have to circle a full city block to turn back the other way.

"Obviously it's not a perfect scenario if you do miss your turn but, obviously, safety is important."

Goertzen says Main Street will, therefore, stay as is when it comes to U-turns.
