Residents in the Town of Niverville will be paying more this year to have their garbage collected.

Following a virtual public hearing during their most recent meeting, Mayor Myron Dyck says his council approved a new waste collection bylaw, as is their procedure every ten years.

Instead of paying an annual waste levy fee of roughly $118 per year as they have been, property owners who use the services will now owe $125 on a yearly basis. Dyck notes the rate has been unchanged for four years now and so this small jump coincides with inflation over that time: about 1.5% every year.

There are also allowances in the new bylaw that permit Council to supplement additional service costs, should that be neccessary.

“If, say, oil does what it did a number of years ago and hits $125 per barrel and all of a sudden we are hit with really high fuel cost for waste collection, then Council has the means to maintain pickup while we deal with how we are going to minimize cost,” offers Dyck.

While a handful of individuals did attend the public hearing online, none spoke for or against the bylaw.

The new Waste Collection Bylaw in the Town of Niverville will be in effect until 2030.
