The Mayor of Niverville could hardly contain his excitement as the federal and provincial governments announced a combined $11,300,000 of funding for the towns multiplex project.

Niverville Mayor Myron DyckRepresentatives from the Town of Niverville, the provincial and federal governments, the Hanover School Division, and the community of Niverville gathered at the Niverville Arena for the big announcement Friday morning.

Mayor Myron Dyck says without funding from other levels of government, there was no way the town could complete a project like this in Niverville. He notes it took years of hard work and collaboration to bring the Community Resource Centre project to fruition.

"I've played a role, but my council, our provincial government, our federal government, volunteers, construction workers, administrators, the list goes on and on and on, and they have all played very important roles. It is truly a collaborative process, the school division because of the campus model, all of that coming together for the greater good of our community. It feels good to be part of a team."

Provincial Minister of Education and Training Kelvin Goertzen

The brand new multiplex facility will be built between the new Niverville High School and the existing Niverville Arena. The 99,027sq.ft. facility will feature a performing arts centre, not-for-profit community childcare centre, field house, leisure activity spaces, an indoor play area, arena, meeting rooms, and community common areas. The total cost of the project will come in at around $19.5M.

Provincial Minister of Education and Training Kelvin Goertzen spoke at the funding announcement Friday morning. He says the province is committing $3.5 M to the Community Resource Centre.

With many proposed projects vying for provincial funding, Goertzen explains why this one stood out.

"There's a lot of synergies around what is happening in Niverville so obviously the school that is being built is a big part of that. There was a desire under the new federal program where they are looking at community campuses to attach onto other things within the community, the school was already being built so it was natural to add on to that."

Goertzen says he hopes other communities can look at what is happening in Niverville and use it as a reference point for future projects.

Federal Minister of International Trade and Diversification Jim Carr represented the federal Minister of Infrastructure at the funding announcement. He says the federal government is happy to support a project like this that has garnered support from the community, two other levels of government, and the Hanover School Division.

Federal Minister of Internation Trade and Diversification Jim Carr"We are very happy to contribute more than $7M to this project. It is very important to community, it is a place to gather, it is a place to keep our bodies and our minds fit, it is a good example of what can be accomplished when various levels of government work together in a vibrant community that has done so much over the years to make this day possible. It is a day to celebrate."

Myron Dyck says they can now move into the construction stage of the project but they also now need to go full steam ahead with fundraising. He notes the town has promised to raise and $3.5M in addition to the $5M they committed to this project back in 2015.
