Niverville Town Council approved a two-year conditional business license for a dog-kenneling operation on Tuesday.

“There were a number of questions raised by Council,” says Mayor of the Town Myron Dyck, “so there was a pretty good discussion held.”

The talking points revolved around the obvious such as noise and smell before being extrapolated to include industry standards and hours of operation. The importance of these issues may have been more pronounced by the kennel's location at 86 Main Street, Niverville’s old town office building.

Councillor Dueck brought up a bylaw that contradicted the placement of a kennel in the downtown area however after stipulations were placed, the outfit was approved.

“It was a conditional use hearing,’ says the Mayor, “so that gives Council the opportunity to place conditions and if they’re going to accept it, to accept it with the following conditions.”

Conditions for the business include secure enclosures, not allowing the exercising of dogs outside from 10 pm until 7 am, the inclusion of a 7-foot fence, and potentially a roof covering.

The owner hopes to have all client parking remain on Main Street however, she has spoken with adjacent businesses and says they would allow for some overflow in times of need.

Deliberation on the topic was dutiful and both of the future business’ neighbours left the meeting without adding any suggestions.
