The Town of Niverville held an official groundbreaking ceremony for the Community Resource and Recreation Centre on Tuesday and also released some artist renderings of the interior.

John Funk attended the groundbreaking with his three of his grandkids Samantha, Eloise, and Ben HiebertJohn Funk is a long-time councilor in the Town of Niverville and he says groundbreaking on the project means a lot to him.

"I look back 31 years ago when I started campaigning running as councilor and my two goals were a personal care home and a recreation complex. the personal care home came about six years ago and now this is very fulfilling for my part and for my grandchildren. We kind of missed my kids already but they will take part too."

Construction on the CRRC actually began a while back on the childcare and performing arts spaces as they are the necessary second phase of the new Niverville High School. Funk says the next step is to begin building the recreation side of the complex and that can now begin.

"Both Chris Wiebe and myself have been in the works with the blueprints all along. We just got the 90% OK on all the blueprints from engineers so we are ready to go. The small stuff like what colour the rooms are painted, those things are not quite done yet but we are ready to role with the foundation."

Manitoba Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler attended the groundbreaking and says it is very exciting to see the nearly completed Niverville High School right next to the CRRC construction site.

"This is the right way to do it because we have pretty severe winters so when you want to get kids involved in sports it is much easier if you don't have to transport them so right away we have sports facility next door to the school. I think you get a way better value for your dollar when you combine them because, during the day, the school can use it and then during the evenings the community uses it."
