Niverville town council has approved their new zoning bylaw one week after holding a public hearing at a special council meeting.

Mayor Myron Dyck says after hearing from their planning team, a number of residents, the chamber of commerce, and a provincial representative from the planning office last Tuesday, council tabled the bylaw to go through the feedback and make the necessary changes. He notes all of the changes council made to the proposed zoning bylaw were deemed minor.

“One of the minor changes was, when it comes to green space, say in an infill development, we are now setting the minimum criteria of 1,000 square feet just to make sure that it is enough space to have a tot park or something to that effect. We have also set some minimums on parking spaces, 12ft. by 20ft.”

Dyck says a resident who lives next to Opa’s park came to the public hearing and offered to purchase the park if the town had no future plans for it because at the moment it is not well taken care of or well used. Dyck says in the last week council has come to a decision.

“It is currently zoned R1 or Residential and that is going to stay. Council has a desire to see continue to be used in some kind of recreational way. Whether we are going to deal with Community in Blooms and see if they have some suggestions for us, but we would like it to be used as some form of green space is the goal of council right now.”

Dyck says after hearing from the chamber of commerce they decided to remove updated signage regulations from the zoning bylaw and work with the chamber to come up with signage regulations that benefit both the town and businesses. He notes council has now given third and final reading to the zoning bylaw.
