The Province of Manitoba has announced a new school in Niverville is on their list of top priorities when it comes to education in the province.

Hanover School Division superintendent Randy Dueck says they have been asking for a new school in Niverville for the past five years and are delighted to see the province on board with fulfilling one of their capital project requests. Dueck notes, come fall, there will be 13 portable classrooms at Niverville Collegiate Institute, with a total of about 60 in the division. He says they're desired goal is to create three schools in Niverville.

"At the end of the day, what we will have in Niverville is the early year's school, as we have it right now, the K to 4. The current NCI will be converted into a middle school and it will run Grades 5 to 8. Then the new school [when officially announced] will be a high school, a Grade 9 to 12."

Dueck says they are hoping the new school would be a 400 student school with capacity for 500 or 600 students, as well as room for additions in the future. He notes with three schools in Niverville, the capacity would last for some time at the current growth levels.

He adds other top priority capital projects for the division include an addition at Mitchell Elementary and a new early years school in Steinbach, where land has already been acquired west of Glacier Bay.
