The Manager of Recreation and Community Services for the Rural Municipality of Hanover says it has been a challenge getting community skating rinks up and running this year. But Lisa Baldwin says rinks are now functional in Mitchell, Kleefeld and New Bothwell, while Blumenort's is nearly ready to go too.

"This weather, it has made it difficult for our ice makers," says Baldwin. "The on and off mild temperatures, the snow and all that kind of stuff has definitely had an impact on how soon we can get the ice ready."

Baldwin says outdoor rinks are a great example of accessible space for people to make use of in a recreation setting. She notes they are well utilized in Hanover.

"If you are out and you are seeing those ice makers hard at work to make that ice for you, just say thank you to them," suggests Baldwin. "They are lots of times volunteers or community members and they are working hard. So give them a 'thanks' or a nice hot chocolate or something."

In addition to the outdoor skating rinks, the communities of Kleefeld and Mitchell also have toboggan runs.
