A resident in one of the newly-annexed areas of Steinbach wants a refund from the city. Eleanor Penner, who lives along Park Road West, says she was charged on her tax bill for a full year of garbage pick-up this year. But, appearing before city council this week, she says the city only started picking up garbage in the new areas in September. Penner adds her questions to the staff at city hall were not answered satisfactorily.

"When I paid my taxes, I asked to talk to one of your employees about the possibility of getting a refund on charges for 2018 for services not received. I was told that the system is

set up in such a manner that the procedure would be quite difficult to do that."

The city's garbage charge works out to about $11 a month which would total $88 for the eight months Penner did not receive service. Furthermore, Penner says during that time, she paid the $10 fee each month to take her garbage directly to the city's landfill site. Penner appealed to city council to make this right.

"I'm asking for you to consider compensating me for the amount of taxes paid from January to August 2018, what I paid for services that I did not receive."

City council has asked the administration to look into the matter.

The city added 61 residences through annexation and all of them would be in a similar situation.
