Steinbach's Fire Chief estimates about 1,500 turkeys survived the crash Wednesday at Blumenort.

A semi transporting about 2,300 birds flipped while turning into the community from the north. The crash happened around 11:30 am and it took about seven hours before the scene was cleared.

Kel Toews says because of the structure of the truck, they could not flip it back upright without destroying the turkey cages. So, they cut away the cages and then removed the birds by hand.

He notes the cost of cleanup is covered in part by insurance.

As of Thursday morning, RCMP had not yet determined what caused the crash. The driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.
