Even the nicest summers days can be spoiled by the presence of mosquitoes, this year, however, this does not seem to be a problem.

Russ Dyck, the Head of Parks and Recreation for Steinbach says the conditions have been great this year.

“We have relatively small amounts of standing water around and the trap counts are low, which is good news. If it rains a bit and then we have a week of dry it doesn’t stay around very long”

Dyck indicates that lately, each mosquito trap has yielded between 29 and 86 mosquitoes, noting that last year there were counts above 100. According to our records at Steinbach Online, the last bad year was 2015, where multiple traps returned over 300 mosquitoes each.

Though the mosquito count is down, Dyck notes he and his crew are still taking precautionary measures.

“We are still out there monitoring every day, there are small pockets of standing water in some ditches that we do find some larva and apply larvacide. Generally speaking whether its dry or not we’re still out there monitoring to make sure we’re catching everything.”

Dyck suggests if the kinds of weather we are currently having persists, there should not be a change in the mosquito population.
