The RM and LUD of La Broquerie will collectively receive roughly $33,000 more in gas tax this year.

Jenna Patterson, the Manager of Administration and Finance for the RM says this is because of a recent deal between the provincial and federal governments.

“Canada and Manitoba have signed a new ten-year agreement that increases every two-years on a per-capita basis. So, as our population grows, our gas tax allocation increases.”

Of this $33,000, Patterson indicates that $15,000 will be given to the LUD for their committee to use as they see fit. Meanwhile, the remaining $18,000 will go to the La Broquerie Council to attend to the municipality's needs.

According to Patterson, this is a good thing: “It means that we will have additional gas tax funds to put towards capital projects. Essentially, it gives us a little bit more money without having to raise it through taxation.”

Patterson notes that this money is very often spent on road rehabilitation or new road construction, but acknowledges that Council has not yet decided where this year’s surplus will be used.
