Manitoba's top doctor has released more details on the outbreak at a church in Sarto. The outbreak has been declared at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin notes the number of cases is not a reflection on the church's efforts. He says the latest announcement of a COVID-19 exposure is linked to a previous exposure, creating a significant amount of cases.

St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Sarto, a church in the R.M of Hanover, has seen an instance of a COVID-19 exposure on February 21.

"The latest one has ten confirmed cases, many more contacts there," says Dr. Roussin. "So it is significant. It requires two people in hospital."

Dr. Roussin says this is connected to an exposure on March 4 at St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Church in Winnipeg.

"This is not a reflection on the hard work of the people who are trying to make their patrons safe. It is a reflection on a highly communicable virus."

St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church is now being considered an outbreak site, moving to Critical Level Red on the Pandemic Response System. The province is asking those who have COVID-19 symptoms and attended any events at, or in relationship to, the church on February 21 to test for COVID-19.
