The Mayor for Steinbach says residents have noticed how much sand and gravel there is on streets and sidewalks now that it's spring.

Earlier this week, city crews began a street sweeping job that is expected to take a month. At Friday morning's Open Door, Chris Goertzen says a lot of people came to talk about the mess. He notes they have suggested alternatives, such as beet juice.

"Certainly our staff are looking at those type of things and it was interesting to hear the perspective of citizens," he says. "Obviously we want to do well for the environment, at the same time hopefully be efficient."

Goertzen says another topic that came up Friday was derelict vehicles. He says there are still a few in Steinbach, which is illegal.

"You need to have your vehicles registered or you have to have other permits to allow vehicles to sit but they have to be stored appropriately," says Goertzen.

Goertzen invites anyone who spots a derelict vehicle in Steinbach to contact city hall.
