Manitoba Hydro has recognized the rapid growth of the southeast and has decided to come to Steinbach to discuss the changes in store for the region.

Spokesperson Bruce Owen indicates that hydro representatives will be coming to the Steinbach Arts Council between 4 PM and 8 PM, Tuesday evening, to explain what local residents can expect in the coming years.

“Steinbach and the area is one of the fastest growing areas in Canada,” comments Owen, “and I know that doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone, but in order to meet the growth projected over the next two decades our system has to [expand].”

Owen touts the event as a “coffee and conversation,” and says “we are making an effort to provide information to those who are interested.”

Topics of discussion will include large initiatives that affect the area like the De Salaberry East Project and the Manitoba-Minnesota Transmission Project, as well as smaller, more localized endeavors.

Owen says they will also be available to explain their requested rate increase of 3.5% that is intended to combat the area’s ongoing influx of people.

“With new people moving to the regions comes new businesses, new home construction, new street lights, and larger producers, which all require a reliable supply of electricity,” he explains.

In addition to these more obvious discussion points, Owen stresses that any and all electricity-related topics are open to conversation.

“We just encourage people to come and meet with us and bring their questions and concerns.”
