RCMP say one person is dead following a three vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon south of Steinbach.

At approximately 3:15 pm, Steinbach RCMP were notified of the collision at the intersection of Provincial Road 303 or Ridge Road and Road 31 East in the Rural Municipality of Hanover. When officers arrived on scene, there were multiple injured people being treated and transported to hospital.

Initial investigation has determined that a car travelling north on Road 31 East, failed to stop at the stop sign and entered the intersection when it was not safe to do so. The car struck a westbound minivan, causing the minivan to hit an eastbound SUV. Both the minivan and SUV ended up in the southbound ditch.

The driver of the minivan, a 64-year-old woman from Hanover was airlifted to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg in serious condition but with non-life-threatening injuries. There were also six children in the minivan, between the ages of eight and 12 from Hanover. They were transported to Winnipeg hospital by ground ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the SUV was driven by a 59-year-old woman from Steinbach. She was transported to Winnipeg hospital with critical injuries. Her 85-year-old male passenger was pronounced dead on scene.

The 69-year-old female driver of the car, from Lorette, was not physically injured. She was arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. She has been released from custody pending a court date.

The investigation continues with the assistance of an RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist and the RCMP Criminal Collision Investigative Team.
