A film maker from Landmark is hoping to shoot a number of scenes from his next movie here in southeastern Manitoba.

Paul Plett says he has been in the professional film industry for the last 10 years but he got his start working on much smaller projects in Landmark.

"I got into film making the same way a lot of people get into film making. I was just sort of playing around with my friends with video cameras as a kid around Landmark, kind of running around farmyards and making little movies and I guess throughout the years I got a little more serious about art and I loved music and acting and writing and I guess at a certain point I realized all of those things exist within a film."

Plett says since film school, his work has mostly revolved around non-fictional works as it is easier to get funding for things like documentaries and promotional work for MCC and Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

"I often ended up doing a lot of films and promotional stuff around the world. It has taken me to East Africa, Latin America, India and kind of doing the promotional videos, that led me toward doing documentaries. Actually, I have got one showing in Steinbach on April 18th at the heritage village. It is called Seven Points on Earth, it is a documentary about seven Mennonite Farmers around the world."

Plett says though he enjoys working on documentaries his passion is really rooted in works of fiction. His next big project is a feature-length film called “Rama” which is set in a post-apocalyptic future.

"It is a story about a girl who is infected with a deadly virus and she has to cross a post-apocalyptic landscape in order to find a cure so it is a real Sci-fi post-apocalyptic type movie. But, kind of the central theme at the heart of the movie, is kind of the other. This girl is changing and mutating throughout the course of this film and it kind of explores how we relate to people that are different."

Plett says he has already filmed one short film in the same world called Scab with a few scenes shot in the Southeast.
