The official grand opening of a new daycare in Landmark has been a dream come true and a promise fulfilled for the Plett family.

Merrilee, daughter of Marilyn Plett says, the completion of this project has been a long time coming.

Marilyn Ruth Plett 1950-2019 “It has been in the works for a number of years. It's quite an involved story. In 2016, Heartland Community Church in Landmark was looking into the possibility of hosting a daycare in the building, and they tasked my mom, Marilyn to put together a team to look into the feasibility and start developing a plan. As they were sort of getting everything together, in January 2019, my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In the months that followed, my dad and my mom talked to the rest of the family about what leaving a legacy in the community means, because community work was always very important to both of them. So, we decided, as a family, that we would continue my mom's work and we would also put up the seed money to build a new building that could house the centre.”

In September 2020, the Manitoba Government announced they would be allocating $286,705 towards the facility, which helped move the project forward. Plett continues,

“Then through fundraising and immense support from the community, we raised enough money and we now have a brand new building and we've opened our centre!”

The Legacy Children’s Centre has 32 spots and is located at the northern end of the Heartland Community Church parking lot. The building is attached to the church and therefore has access to the kitchen and gymnasium if needed.

Plett says the whole project represents the larger community working together. Seeing a need and stepping up to help and really being there for each other.

“Looking at where we've come from and the promise that we made to my mom to get this done, we know that she'll be super proud of us.”
