Some of the parents of the kindergarten class at Ecole Lorette Immersion did not get the answer they were hoping for from the Seine River school board.

Two weeks ago, a group of parents presented their case to the board saying their children's large class of 28 is too big and they would prefer to see it split in two. The matter came up for discussion at Tuesday night's board meeting.

"The board discussed, based upon information, observations and the plan that the school was going to implement for the classroom, the board decided to leave the class configuration up to school administration, division administration and the school team," says division Superintendent Mike Borgfjord.

He notes the class will remain 28 but Borgfjord points out there are two full-time teachers inside the classroom along with an educational assistant so he notes there are lots of opportunities for them to split the class into smaller groups to better cater to the students depending on their learning needs.

"There is still a lot of opportunity for more observation, different observations and different collaboration between teachers and provides an opportunity for two professionals to work together and meet the needs of the students," notes Borgfjord.

He adds the school still has the option of making the split but he says they don't anticipate that will happen as there are many advantages in keeping the students in a larger class.
