A fire at the Steinbach Landfill early Monday morning kept firefighters busy all night.

Steinbach Fire Chief Kel Toews says they were called to the landfill site at approximately 1 A.M.

"We spent probably the better part of five or six hours there putting water on it and landfill staff were using bull-dozers to move some of the product away. Landfill fires are tough fires, they are almost like peat moss fire. They will go underground and you have got to get right to the seat of them."

Toews says the fire was most likely caused by something that was dumped there on Saturday or earlier. He notes it was just bad luck that the fire had to flare up in the middle of the night. He adds his firefighters got back to the fire hall at 6 A.M. and then spent at least an hour cleaning equipment. it was a long night.
