The community of La Broquerie will look much cleaner by the end of next week.

Spokesperson Farrel Rempel says La Broquerie Clean Up Day has turned into a week starting Saturday and running until the following Saturday, May 13. Rempel notes they asked businesses in the community to take a mile along Highway 52 from Herschfeld Road to Marchand, and then residents are able to sign up to clean rural miles north and south of the highway. He adds the schools in La Broquerie will be cleaning the Village of La Broquerie.

"The sad part about all of this, Steinbach and us, is this shouldn't be happening, we shouldn't need to do this," notes Rempel. "I'm sorry, but there's no reason why people throw garbage out their vehicle window when they're driving. That's the sad part about the whole thing. It's great that people get up to clean up and do this, but the reality about the whole thing is this shouldn't be happening."

Rempel says, while the winds do blow recycling around during the year, the extent of garbage lining roads and ditches is more than just recycling catching the wind.

He notes there around 80 to 100 miles of the community which will be cleaned at next week's end. Rempel says it's a fun day to get together with people, work at creating a more attractive community, and laugh at any interesting finds.

On May 13, as a thank you to all the volunteers, there will be a barbeque at La Broquerie Lumber Rona starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m.
