The Rural Municipality of La Broquerie Council Chambers was standing room only when approximately 60 people gathered Monday night.  The RM had called a public meeting in regards to the Manitoba-Minnesota Transmission Project and their preferred route.

Difference between Route 207 and Route 208In May 2014 Reeve Claude Lussier and council carried a resolution stating: "be it resolved that the Council of the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie on behalf of its citizens, strongly urge Manitoba Hydro to consider alternative route #207 as the logical alternative for this project."  MLA for La Verendrye Dennis Smook says in speaking with Lussier last year it was understood that Route 207 would be used because it would go through less populated areas.

Council notes they recently found out Hydro will be using Route 208 instead which has caused residents to become upset and concerned.  Smook feels residents have the right to be upset.

"I think that people have the right to have a choice as to where things are going to happen in their community and you have to be open and understanding.  If someone is going to be taking over your land that you've lived on for many years and put a hydro line right alongside of it, you should have some say about what's happening."

Reeve Lewis Weiss explains the main concern heard from residents was they feel Hydro is willing to put the line directly through residential, farm and almost through town when they could put it out in land less affected.

Albert Wolfe is one such resident that will have the line go directly through his land if Route 208 is constructed.  He says he will be able to see it through his living room window but knows he's not the only one who would be effected.

"It's going through my property but I think it's going to affect all of La Broquerie.  It's not a case of get it off my land because then they're going to put it on my neighbour's land.  I want them to see ... put cost out where they're putting it in, in regards to people and monetary and put it where it makes common sense and I don't think it makes common sense to put it right beside town and through good farm land when we have the option of going on crown land."

Hydro's Open House for the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie is on February 17th in the Arena Hall.
