Following his retirement from truck driving, John Unrau would like to commit his time to council in the R.M. of La Broquerie.

Unrau says he has lived in Marchand for 25 years and for 18 of those years he owned and ran Evergreen Equipment. He notes more recently he has been in the trucking industry but retired this year. He is now running for a seat on council in the Ward 2 of the R.M. of La Broquerie.

"I had some friends approach me and ask me to run. I have also had an interest in it for a long long time and right now I have the time to spend, to listen to people, to see what their concerns are and maybe research what can be done, so I believe I can quite a help to council to get things resolved and solve some issues."

Unrau says has loved being involved in the community and helped run the Marchand Community Club for 10 years, working on different projects and planning events. In talking with local residents, Unrau says there are a few issues that are a priority for everyone.

"The two main issues that are on everybody’s mind is taxes and roads. Whether being in urban or the rural area, everybody has something about roads and also our leisure services that need to be looked after and kept up to date and maintained. Taxes, for example, I think we could be holding the line on taxes."

Unrau says he believes more money needs to be spent on roads, but he understands all road issues can’t be fixed immediately and good infrastructure planning for the future is necessary in keeping costs low. He says now that he is retired he looks forward to spending his time serving the community.

There are five council candidates in Ward 2 of La Broquerie and residents will elect three of those five. For the full list of candidates visit the Steinbachonline Elections Page.
