Bars left to layoff employees are suddenly searching for them to take shifts.

“I have concerns with the government and their decision-making process,” says Owning Partner of St Adolphe Motor Inn Chris Senderewich.

The proprietor says he found out about the flip flop on bar restrictions at 10 pm Monday night after already having difficult discussions with employees about layoffs.

“I just think we need to figure out how to communicate these changes a little better,” offers Senderewich. “It causes a lot of uncertainty for me timewise.  Financially, there is obvious uncertainty, but then also for my staff. They have questions and it’s frustrating when I don’t have answers for them and I don’t really have anybody to provide me with these answers.”

Senderewich says he learns about what is allowed through word-of-mouth, the newspaper, or his health officer, however, his health officer is getting the information at the last minute, making things very difficult to plan for.

“I understand that its a pretty fluid situation so you don’t know what a month is going to look like,” says Senderewich, “but I would hope that if they’re telling us that we need to do something, that there are valid reasons behind why they’re telling us we need to do this.”

Senderewich’s latest concern revolves around collecting customer’s contact information because he has already been confronted by patrons that say they have the right to privacy. “I’m not an expert on that,” admits Senderewich who wonders if he must now police his establishment.

“There isn’t really any guidance on any of this and I don’t want to get myself into trouble with a legal situation over it. It’s probably not my place to throw this out, but I’m losing faith in some of our decision-makers.”

Senderewich understands the dangers of the virus and says we all need to show concern, but that a certain level of risk is necessary for individuals and businesses to exist.

“I think there has got to be an element of risk that has to be acceptable here,” says Senderewich who suggests those who are susceptible to the virus remain out of bars and restaurants while individuals access caution with their family members.

“I know that’s not easy to do either, but these blanket statements that impact everybody, I don’t think it’s doing anybody any good.”
