Even though many other school divisions in the Southeast closed today, Hanover School Division remained open.

HSD Superintendent Randy Dueck

Superintendent Randy Dueck says all the other school divisions had something in common, a highway closure in their division. "We made the decision to go ahead and stay open today, one of the main factors is none of the highways in the Hanover School Division are closed."

Dueck notes Transportation Supervisor Robert Warkentin is up and driving around at 4:30 am checking road conditions, to make sure buses can make it through okay. He adds, they also take into account the information provided on the internet in regards to weather and roads.

"We make our decision by 5:30 am. We didn't have any closures and we were able to move around, so I'm happy to say we had no incidents whatsoever in terms of busing kids this morning. All of our buses ran their routes on time and it all worked great for us."

The early afternoon was still a little on the blustery side, but Dueck says visibility was very good. He notes there are always varying opinions and different perspectives whether they would stay open or close.

"We need to make a decision that's based on the safety of the kids and this morning I believe we made the right decision. Our kids are safe, they experienced a safe ride to school, and we made the right call."
