The Steinbach Fire Department will burn down a house Saturday. Chief Kel Toews explains it's a house along Loewen Boulevard, just east of Old Tom Road.

"One of our ratepayers had donated an old home to us that we could practice in. We've been using it for about a year-and-a-half and it's now time to burn it down. So on Saturday we'll be doing some final practising, cutting holes in the roof, and when we're done, we're going to burn it down."

He notes there was beginning to be a lot of vandalism at the abandoned house and so the owner asked that the fire department burn it down.

Toews says people may see some puffs of smoke during the morning as they practice and they will then torch the structure around 1:00 p.m., weather permitting.

"Wind will be a factor and, obviously, if it's pouring rain, we'll have to postpone it to another day. But wind will be the biggest factor."
