Members from three fire departments worked through the night Saturday to fight a fire that claimed a home on Road 35E south of Steinbach.

The call came in around 8 pm, and when crews arrived on scene the fire was well established. Steinbach Fire Chief Kel Toews says because there is no fire hydrant, they had to rely on water supplied by tanker trucks from Steinbach, La Broquerie, and Giroux.

"We had a tanker from Giroux and La Broquerie initially, then because of the length of the fire we called in a few members from La Broquerie Fire Department as well, just to give our guys a bit of relief. We were there until about 6 am with a reduced crew."

Toews says the fire started in the basement of the home, but the cause is currently unknown. He says the home is a total loss and is under investigation by the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
