Downtown Steinbach will be humming this weekend as hundreds of hockey players and their parents come here for the annual Silver Stick peewee hockey tournament. Tournament spokesperson Tim Friesen says it should be a very good few days for local businesses.

"We've got 24 teams between the three divisions. That's close to 300 athletes plus their parents and families. It's going to be busy. It's a huge economic boost. The restaurants are going to be packed and the stores, places like Source for Sports and Sport Chek, they are going to have people coming to get skates sharpened and so on."

you've got to run the 50/50, you have to sit at the silent auction table, it's ongoing for everybody and that doesn't count all the administration that goes into registering teams and coming up with the schedules and that kind of stuff."

The tournament continues through Sunday at the T.G. Smith Centre.

This is the first of four consecutive weekends of major hockey and ringette tournaments in Steinbach.
