A teenage hiker died Friday along the Mantario Trail near Caddy Lake.

At 4 pm that day, Manitoba RCMP's Operational Communications Centre received a notice of a distress signal from a personal satellite messenger device. The coordinates placed the signal near a section of the Mantario Trail.

Further investigation determined that an 18-year-old male hiker from East St. Paul had been dropped off with supplies at the southern trail head near Caddy Lake earlier that morning.

A helicopter that was already in the general area was notified of the distress signal and flew to the coordinates to search for the man. The helicopter made visual contact at approximately 6 pm, but was unable to land due to the terrain. The pilot says the hiker was not moving.

Falcon Lake RCMP, EMS, Manitoba Sustainable Development and the Southeast Whiteshell Fire Department then headed towards the remote location to search for the man. Searchers found him dead at 7:50 pm near the trail on the east side of Marion Lake.

An autopsy has been scheduled.

The investigation continues.
