It may be the end of November but the harvest continues for some producers here in the southeast. Marc Hutlet of Marc Hutlet Seeds at Ste. Anne estimates about 70 per cent of grain corn is now in the bin. However, he adds, it is slow going.

"We are managing to knock off a small percentage every day. There are always a few variables out there that are stalling us. If it's too warm and the plants have a bit of snow on them, it plugs the sieves, so the guys can't go every day. But when it's colder, some of them will fire up again. I've been in discussions with quite a few guys in the last few days and they have one or two days of harvest left, some are wrapped up, but I think there is some crop out there that will stay out there."

Hutlet says sunflower harvest is also winding down and notes there were some outstanding results.

Meanwhile, Brian Dueck of Seine River Seed Farms near Ste. Anne, says he is hearing similar things about the corn harvest.

"Some guys are waiting for spring, some guys are doing it right now. It's kind of a mixed bag depending on what their situation is."

Both Dueck and Hutlet say that while the harvest has been long and dragged out due to the weather this fall, producers in the southeast are generally reporting crops that were average to above average.

Dueck notes most fall field work did not get done so it will be a very busy spring for farmers next year.

"It will be a bit of a pinch in spring, but we have been through these before."
