15 teams from all over western Canada are in the area this weekend for the 13, 15 and 18U Western AA Baseball Championships in La Broquerie.

Spokesperson Louis Cote says there a lot of factors that play into being chosen to host such a prestigious tournament. "Facilities is number one because if you don’t have the facilitates you can’t host it," notes Cote, "then being able to bring 15 teams to the community and then with BC and Alberta coming in, you got teams flying in so you have to be somewhat near Winnipeg."

Cote adds they are very excited to be able to host the event and says they also got a lot of help from the RM of La Broquerie. "Our bantam diamond the fences weren’t quite deep enough so we had to put a new fence up. We got some help from the RM of La Broquerie for that. We brought in more dirt to fix the sliding areas, work on the infield, the mounds, the bull pens, it’s looking really good. A lot of improvements in the last couple years."

Opening ceremonies begin at 5pm and Cote says they will be honouring local baseball heroes Giles Nadeau and Roy Siedler for their contributions to the program over the past 20 years. The tournament wraps up with the finals on Sunday afternoon.
